• (fr-FR) Minéral mou et jaune composé de trisulfure d'arsenic que l'on trouve à l'état naturel dans les fumerolles volcaniques, les veines hydrothermales, les sources chaudes et comme produit de décomposition du réalgar. Il se transforme en une forme cristalline rouge à 170 C. L'orpiment a été utilisé dès l'Antiquité comme pigment dans la peinture, l'enluminure de manuscrits et la sculpture polychrome, ayant un bon pouvoir colorant, mais non permanent et toxique. Le jaune de roi est son homologue synthétique. Formule chimique: As2S3
• (en-US) A soft, yellow mineral composed of arsenic trisulfide that occurs naturally in volcanic fumaroles, hydrothermal veins, hot springs, and as a decomposition product of realgar. It changes to a red crystalline form at 170 C. Orpiment was used from ancient times as a pigment in painting, in manuscript illumination, and polychrome sculpture, having good tinting strength, but not permanent and toxic. King's yellow is the synthetic counterpart.
